Cloud Control & Data

No connection to the internet is required for the system to operate. The eMotion™ Cloud Hub is only required when the need for external monitoring of energy consumption and the collection of emergency status feedback is wanted on a site.

We can supply what we call an eMotion™ Cloud Hub. These simply need a power supply and internet connection with no commissioning required. They collect the information and data from the luminaires around them (no limit to number of devices) and then upload this once per hour. The internet connection can be via:

  • Hard Wired Ethernet .
  • 3G Dongle.
  • Wi-Fi.

The number of eMotion™ Cloud Hubs required is dependant on the type of building and environment so should be discussed with the ASD Lighting team prior to specifying.

Core System

  • Every luminaire will have a wireless controller.
  • The only connections to the luminaires are Live, Neutral and Earth.
    • This includes the emergency luminaires which no longer need a separate switched live.
  • One Luminaires per zone might have a daylight sensor.
  • Wireless scene-plates might be added for scene-setting.
  • That’s it! There are no remote sensors, Lighting Controls Modules, network controllers or head-end PCs onsite.

Features & Benefits

The system consists only of luminaires, each with a controller and sensor. There are no remote sensors, network controllers, light control modules or head-end PCs.

There is zero on-cost for the installation of controls, a sensor in every luminaire ensures full presence coverage, allowing short sensor timeouts before dimming to a standby level, giving optimum energy savings. Any components failure can only affect the individual luminaire. There is no controller component that can cause a zones to fail.

Unlimited grouping, specifically defined on an interactive touchscreen drawing on a tablet.

Logical groups can be defined so that lighting switches and dims in logical groups. Luminaires can be shared between several logical groups. Daylight zones are defined independently of Presence groups. Semi-automated linking allows lighting to operate in sequential overlapping groups. This effectively extends the sensor range to an unlimited distance, either in linear format along walkways and corridors or in square overlapping groups in open plan areas.

Online or offline status monitoring.

Each fitting reports its energy usage, emergency lighting status and (optionally) lamp and gear status. This can be viewed on the tablet and if required, automatically uploaded to the cloud to be monitored via the web portal.

One daylight sensor controls daylight groups.

Having one daylight sensor in a zone rather than one per luminaire ensures that lights dim in logical groups rather than randomly. They can be grouped into zones so that rows, zones or individual luminaires that have different reaction to daylight based on their surroundings.

Occupied / unoccupied mode.

When the building is occupied the lighting can be set for maximum comfort: Lights might dim but not switch off, light levels may be higher, and PIR timeouts may be longer. 

When the building is unoccupied the lighting will still operate in security mode: Lighting might come on at a lower level and switch off after a short time-out, there is no need for any time switch, & occupation of the building is detected automatically.

Open system.

The system is compatible with all types and manufacturers of sensors, drivers, lamps and emergency lighting systems. In one room there might be nine LED luminaires with Tridonic DSI Drivers, 3 Low Voltage spotlights with OSRAM DALI transformers, a highbay with a 1-10v driver a free standing table lamp with GLS lamp and a heater. These could use any combination of PIRs, mains sensors, microwave detectors and wall switches from any manufacturer such as CP, Exor, Hytronik, etc. The self-test emergency lighting could be from Tridonic, Mackwell, Lite Plan, etc. The user will see all of these on the same drawing and be able to configure, link and monitor them without needing to know that they are different.

Interface with other services.

The lighting sensors can be used to control other devices: Drinks machines, water heaters, heating and air extraction systems can be switched off when the building is unoccupied. BMS triggers such as Fire Alarm conditions can override lighting to 100%.

Automatic recommissioning.

Any component, including sensors, DALI drivers and wireless nodes can be replaced without recommissioning. The new device will inherit the settings of the device replaced.

Commissioning

Product Specification

  • Detects newly installed eMotion™ Cloud Devices and allows you to position them on a drawing.
  • Allows configuration of devices to set light levels, sensor time-outs, etc.
  • Allows linking of devices into control groups for presence and daylight.
  • Collates occupancy data for energy usage monitoring and status of emergency lighting
  • Drawings, configuration and audit trail can be backed up to cloud.
  • No internet connection required but if available then the system can be monitored and controlled offsite.

Hardware Requirements

  • The software will work on any Android device with at least 1280 x 800 pixel screen resolution.
  • We strongly recommend Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 or Tab 3.

ASD Lighting will install the software on your tablet.
Updates are via Google Play.

Collator

Description

The collator forms the gateway between the wireless luminaires and the internet. It can be configured for one-way communication (i.e. monitoring only) or two-way communication for remote configuration. Most sites will only require one collator. Larger sites can have as many as required.

Installation

The collator needs to be installed within range of the first luminaires, ideally within a single hop range of at least 20 luminaires. The best location is in the centre of the luminaires and not enclosed. The worst case is in a box, in a brick store room, in the corner of the area. It needs a power supply and a connection to the internet. The best connection is ethernet or failing that 3G. Wi-Fi can provide a good connection, provided that the Wi-Fi router is stable, reliable and the settings are not changed.

Commissioning

If using Wi-Fi then the Collator needs to be given the access point name and password.

5v Micro USB. 2 Amp Mains Adapter.

Data Usage

Approximately 1 Gb per 1,000 luminaires per month for monitoring.
Additional data used for remote configuration

Connection

Supplied as standard with ethernet socket and Wi-Fi adapter. Optional 3G adapter supplied with 12 months data. Each type of connection has benefits:

  • 3G provides connectivity without involving the client’s IT infrastructure.
  • Ethernet provides a free reliable connection.
  • Wi-Fi provides a free wireless connection where it is difficult to install ethernet points.

3G Pricing

ASD Lighting buys blocks of data that can be shared between data-only SIM cards. This is cost-effective for small sites as a minimum SIM contract is typically 5 Gb per month and a site with 500 luminaires might only use 10% of this. The contract can therefore be shared between 10 sites. Alternatively clients can maintain their own SIM contracts.

Applications

When used in conjunction with a self-test module, the G2-E3M enables emergency monitoring and test reports to be compiled, covering the testing of emergency lighting in buildings. Offering full testing and fault indication without the need for expensive and time consuming manual intervention.

The system can be fully tested and maintained during normal working hours without disruption to the building occupants or activities and is tested fully in accordance with the current British Standards.

Offices

The requirement for Lighting Controls in the office comes from many sources: Building controls regulations, environmental standards, the desire to save energy, and sometimes the desire to be seen to be saving energy. Modern controls with tunable white light can enhance rather than detract from the office environment and have become an essential part of the wellbeing environment.

Warehouses & Industrial

Industrial premises offer the shortest investment payback times from lighting controls. The luminaires are more powerful and so the savings per luminaire are greater while the on-cost of controls per luminaire is the same.

Retail

Control systems for retail chains are all about offsite management and control. The lighting controls requirement behind the scenes is like other commercial premises but the front-of-house requirement is very different. The visible lights should never switch off during trading hours, else the store looks closed.

Car Parks

Lighting Controls in car parks pose a set of challenges which arguable can only be solved with wireless controls. An optimum solution needs almost as many overlapping groups as the number of luminaires. Previous attempts to solve this with DALI have been complicated and, even where they appear to work at the outset, fall into disuse after the first attempt at any modifications or maintenance.
